CleverPHL: Focusing on the Learning Process by Supplementing Instructional Software with Digital Recording and Evaluation Functionality

Abstract

This paper introduces CleverPHL, a capture & replay tool specifically suited for educational scenarios, which support s the cognitive apprenticeship concept. Learners actively take part in learning by observing and working with artifacts, sharing the process of producing rather than only presenting results. We identify multiple didactic scenarios focusing on the learning process in which interactive learning can be advanced with CleverPHL by providing capture & replay functionality in order to allow for self-directed yet remotely supported learning. Additionally CleverPHL allows for evaluation of usability and empirical research by providing qualitative and quantitative analyzes of semantically structured interaction records. CleverPHL is an instantiation of the object-oriented framework Jacareto. Thus, specific adaptations for special evaluations of (instructional or other kind of) software can easily be integrated.
